SPPA welcomes Scottish Government's guidance on pre-school teacher deployment

The Scottish Government has published guidance on teacher deployment for early years centres, which links to the Concordat commitment on providing access to a teacher for all pre-school children.  This document aims to summarise the research evidence on the benefits teachers can bring to pre-school settings, in the context of the wider team in those settings, and pose some reflective questions which centres may wish to consider in relation to teacher deployment.  The link to the guidance document is displayed at the bottom of this page.

Commenting on the new guidance, Ian McLaughlan, SPPA's Chief Executive, said: “The recognition that teachers can play a significant role in supporting pre-school children and also other professional staff colleagues who work with them, is a significant, positive contribution to the implementation of the Scottish Government’s Early Years Framework and therefore undoubtedly a welcome development for children and their families.

"Representing the interests of voluntary sector pre-school providers, SPPA has expressed its concerns about any inequality regarding the level of access to a teacher, and is therefore pleased to learn that ‘one of the main aims of this guidance is to encourage an overall increase in the level of teacher involvement’ ”.
