Snow and Ice Advice for Groups

As the severe weather continues groups should have contingency plans in place to cope with the disruptions severe weather conditions can cause. Managers and service providers should

  • Monitor winter storm watch, warnings, blizzard warnings or travel advisories.  Consider pre-storm closing (night before) or early closing depending on conditions.
  • Follow the settings emergency closure procedures.
  • Ensure emergency contact details for children's parents/carers and staff are up to date and kept accessible and make timely contacts with parents/cares to alert them to group closure or early closure. 
  • Check the status of battery powered radios and torches. Ensure spare replacement batteries are available. Mobile phones should be kept fully charged in case of land line failure.
  • Ensure back-up lighting, power, and heat are available in case of power cuts.
  • Make sure snow and ice is removed from all access and egress points.
  • Arrange for the removal of all possible debris, for example, fallen trees, roof tiles and utility lines, as soon as possible
